Flying the unfriendly skies

There are many avenues to YouTube stardom. You could tell a story about cats, film your child after a trip to the dentist, or capture some other novel moment from your life. Or you could share a song you wrote, one that connects with people at an emotional level. David Carroll chose to follow the song path to stardom. He created a series of songs based on something that millions of people can relate to. No, it’s not a song about love. It’s a song about air travel, and the heartbreak that surrounds it.

A brief background of events leading up to the song’s creation: David Carroll flew United, his guitar was broken during the flight, United denied compensation, David was left with little recourse.  Instead of giving up on the issue, David chose to create a song to express his frustrations (and probably to get a little publicity for his band).

The song itself isn’t anything spectacular, what makes it a hit is how it taps into the frustrations of air travel. People identify with the song because it touches on the fact that airlines have multiple personality disorder: you book with the friendly face, but you know that at any point the ugly side could come out.
